No birth time? What your chart can still tell you
Without a birth time you can still know your Sun sign unless you were born on the day it changed, your Moon sign on just over half of all days, and the signs of Mercury through Pluto unless one sits within about a degree of a sign's edge. What you cannot know is your rising sign, your Midheaven or your houses. Those turn with the clock, and a new sign rises about every two hours.
What OMNIA does with an unknown time
- Open OMNIA and tap the brass astrolabe labelled “Western Astrology”. The form appears after the tap.
- Enter your birth date and place, switch on “Hour Unknown”, choose an area under Domain of Inquiry, and press the seal marked Commence.
- The planets are listed below the wheel. Where the ASC line would be, the chart says “Hour unknown — the houses are withheld”.
The planets and the aspects between them are still cast. OMNIA does not invent an Ascendant by assuming you were born at noon.
The planets themselves are placed for noon at your birthplace on your birth date. If no birthplace is set, OMNIA uses noon in your device's time zone instead, which can be many hours from the real thing, so pick the place from the list even when the time is missing. With the place set, the error is small for most planets: Mercury, the fastest after the Moon, covers at most about 1° in half a day. Aspects come from the same noon positions, so the Moon's are the least certain. Two planets need a second look, below, and any other only if the noon chart puts it within about 1° of a sign's edge.
Questions people ask next
Can my Moon sign be wrong without a birth time?
With your birthplace set, only if the Moon changed sign that day, which happens on a little under half of all days. It moves about 12° to 15° a day, so at any hour of your birth date it was at most about 8° from where the noon chart shows it. If the noon Moon is between 8° and 22° of its sign, you can trust it. If it is in the first or last 8°, switch Hour Unknown off and cast the chart for 00:00 and again for 23:59. If the sign changes between them, your Moon sign is one of those two, and only the birth time can settle which. Ignore the rising sign on those two charts; it belongs to the time you typed in.
Can my Sun sign be wrong?
Only around the day the Sun changes sign, once a month, between about the 17th and the 24th. The Sun moves about 1° a day, so the noon chart can tell you: if it puts the Sun above 29° or below 1° of its sign, cast 00:00 and 23:59 as well and compare. The same check works for Mercury, Venus or Mars when one of them sits that close to the edge of a sign.
Where can I find my birth time?
Start with the birth certificate; the long-form version is more likely to record the time. Hospital records come next, then family papers and the memory of whoever was there. Note where the time came from. The closer it is to a record made on the day, the more weight it can carry.
I only know roughly when I was born. Is that enough?
It can be, if the window is short. Cast the chart for the earliest time it could have been and again for the latest. If both show the same rising sign and the window is under half a day, that is your rising sign. If they differ, yours is one of the two or a sign that lies between them in zodiac order. An hour or two usually leaves one or two candidates, a whole morning three to six. That still beats twelve.
Each cast also starts a reading and uses one of the day's free readings, the 00:00 and 23:59 checks included. Casting the same chart again before midnight UTC, with the same area and nothing typed in, does not use another. If you run out, the chart still appears; only the reading waits.
Does the birthplace matter as well?
Yes. The place sets the time zone and the horizon. If OMNIA cannot find the town, type its coordinates into the place field, for example 39.9, 116.4. If no place is set at all, the houses are left out here too, and the birth time, or noon when there is no time, is read in your device's time zone. If that is not where you were born, the planets are placed for the wrong hour, perhaps many hours off, and the Moon can be more than 8° out.
With a time and a place
You get the full natal chart: the Sun through Pluto by sign and degree, the Ascendant and Midheaven, Placidus houses and the five major aspects. The positions come from astronomy-engine, to about one arcminute, and the language model that writes your reading never computes a planetary position.
A chart without a time is free like any other, and so are Sign, Reading and Whisper, three of the four parts of the reading, within a daily limit. You don't sign up or give a card. Guidance is for subscribers. Nothing about your birth is stored on our servers.
