What Moon were you born under?

Western astrology · tropical zodiac · Updated 2026-10-07

People who ask this usually mean one of two things: the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born, which is your Moon sign, or the phase the Moon was in at that moment. OMNIA shows the first directly, to the degree. The second you can read off the same chart from where the Sun and Moon sit.

Finding your Moon sign in OMNIA

  1. Open OMNIA and tap the brass astrolabe labelled “Western Astrology”. That tap is what brings up the form.
  2. Enter your birth date, time and place, choose one of the six areas under Domain of Inquiry, and press the seal marked Commence.
  3. In the planet list below the wheel, the Moon row gives its sign and degree.

What people tend to ask next

Does my birth time change my Moon sign?

Sometimes. The Moon goes round the whole zodiac in about 27 days, so it spends a little over two days in each sign. On just over half of all days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. On the rest it moves into the next sign at some hour, and then the time you were born decides which sign you have.

What if I don't know my birth time?

With “Hour Unknown” switched on, OMNIA places the planets for noon at your birthplace, so pick the place from the list even without the time. (With no place set it uses noon in your device's time zone, which can be further off.) The Moon moves about 12° to 15° a day, so at any hour of that day it was at most about 8° from where the noon chart shows it.

If the noon Moon sits between 8° and 22° of a sign, your Moon sign is settled. If it is in the first 8° or the last 8°, switch Hour Unknown off and cast the chart for 00:00 and again for 23:59. If the sign changes between them, your Moon sign is one of those two, and only the birth time can settle which. Ignore the rising sign on those two charts; it belongs to the time you typed in. Each of those casts uses one of the day's free readings, and the chart still appears if you have run out.

How do I work out the Moon phase I was born under?

The phase depends on how far the Moon is from the Sun, so compare the two on your chart. If the Moon is in the same sign as the Sun, or close to it, you were born near a new Moon. If it is three signs further on in zodiac order (Sun in Aries, Moon in Cancer, say), near the first quarter. In the opposite sign, near a full Moon. Three signs behind the Sun, near the last quarter.

Going by signs only gets you close. For the exact angle, turn both into longitudes by counting 30° for each sign from 0° Aries (Taurus starts at 30°, Gemini at 60°, and so on round to Pisces at 330°), so 15.37° Taurus becomes 45.37°. Subtract the Sun's from the Moon's, and add 360 if the result is negative. Near 0° is new, 90° first quarter, 180° full, 270° last quarter.

Is the Moon phase on the OMNIA sky panel mine?

No. The panel shows the sky at this moment, including today's Moon phase. Your birth phase comes from your chart.

What does the Moon sign mean?

In Western astrology it is traditionally read as your emotional side: what makes you feel safe, and how you react before you have had time to think. That reading is a convention handed down by astrologers, and nobody has measured it.

What the chart includes

A full natal chart, with the Moon and every other planet from the Sun to Pluto by sign and degree, plus the Ascendant and Midheaven, Placidus houses and the five major aspects. The numbers come from astronomy-engine, accurate to about one arcminute. The language model that writes your reading never computes a planetary position.

You pay nothing for the chart or for three of the four parts of the reading (Sign, Reading and Whisper), within a daily limit, and there is no sign-up or card. Guidance is kept for subscribers. Nothing about your birth is stored on our servers.
